Identity and Integrity in Teaching
Hi! My name is Brianna King I work at Maxfield Elementary, I am a Reading Corps tutor. I've been a tutor for Reading Corps for 3 years, but before I became a tutor I worked at Maxfield as a teacher assistance.
So, why do I think it is important that, as a future teacher, you learn about mindful awareness in the classroom setting:
It's important for future teacher to learn mindful awareness, because we as educator don't want to jump at a problem right away without know what is happening in that moment. We have to think about many thing before we give a reaction. We don't want to make the issue bigger than it already is. We have to think about what caused this to happen, what happened between than and now for us to get this reaction that we are getting from the student. As well what tools can we use to prevent this from happening again.
Mindfulness awareness is also focusing on all students sometimes as educator we tend to look at the student with "behavioral problems" because of the action they are showing that we forget about the students that are follow direction. That we as educator have to also be mindful and acknowledge the scholar that are showing and following directions.
Self-care strategies:
Self-care strategies are different for everyone pick something that works best for you! That maybe writing, walking, listening to podcast, spending time with family, taking a relaxing bath and much more. But, while you are at work set boundaries for yourself it could be hard not to think about work while your home or your students once they leave you for the day. But, boundaries are something that it's important not even for kids but for adults too.
My favorite quote:
"Mindfulness is also "heartfulness" in that it promotes both an openminded and open-hearted apperception of the world reminding us of its intrinsic goodness and beauty"
(Jennings, p. 2, 2015)
This quote resonate with me, because it is telling us just take a moment and see the beauty in things. Think about how far you have came and you finally reach were you wanted to be a teacher. But also being open minded because you are still learning things, you are going to make mistakes but we are going to grow and learn from those mistakes and reflect on them.
Also seeing the beauty of what we are doing we are changing our student life we are teaching them, caring for them, and advocating for our student everyday and being the safe person for some of them.
My Values:
Core values: Personal Growth, Confidence, and Diversity
Core strengths : Caring, Determined, and Spiritual
So, why am I choosing to be a teacher:
I am going into this educating field because I want to know that my students have someone that looks like them inside the classroom going up with a Individualized Education Program (IEP) and being a person of color. I felt like I work harder than other. I also didn't have anyone who really looked like me inside the classroom which made me very shy inside class when I was younger. I want to show children that no matter their disability, their background or where they come from that I want to be their voice and advocate for them. I don’t want any students I work with or come across to feel that because of their disability they feel left out or they are considered “Different”. Because, once you step foot inside my classroom everyone is welcomed.
Lastly, this quote is so important to me as a future educator. I plan to be there for my students no matter what. I am going to advocate for them and fight for them no matter and push them to be the best them everyday and that they can break barriers no matter the age they are and make a difference in their life, community, family and everyone they come across.
